Sandburg Volleyball Rallies for 4-Set Win Over Spoon River

The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team shrugged off a slow start to defeat Spoon River 23-25, 25-17 25-21, 26-24 on Sunday afternoon at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
The match seemed destined for a fifth set as the Snappers (0-7) took a 24-22 lead in the fourth, but the Chargers (4-1) ran off four straight points to close it out. Sophomore Annie McKim (Yates City, Ill./homeschooled) had a block to tie it at 24 and set up match point with a kill from an assist by Laney Chiaravalle (Peoria, Ill./Limestone).
Sandburg evened the match at a set apiece with a 7-0 run on McKim’s serve, highlighted by a pair of aces. Down 16-15 in the third, the Chargers won the next four points to go ahead for good in the set. Freshman Carley Reeves-Eakins (Branson, Mo./Reeds Spring) opened the run with a kill, followed by back-to-back aces from Gracie Rademaker (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central).
McKim posted a career-high 10 kills and led the Chargers with three aces. Reeves-Eakins had a team-leading 15 kills for Sandburg, while Rademaker, Jerzi Johnson (Monmouth, Ill./United) and Megan Crome (Marshall, Ill./Marshall) each had five kills.
Rademaker also had 16 digs for Sandburg, just behind the team-high 18 digs from libero Kelsey Hobson (Bartonville, Ill./Limestone). Chiaravalle handed out a season-best 37 assists for the Chargers.
